A Rawhide Mallet is essential in any Jewellery workshop to shape and form metal leaving no marks.
The Mallet head is made using tight rolls of hide (leather) soaked in a resin or Shellac for hardening and put on a wood handle.
Before use – the mallet has to be conditioned. We recommend the following .
Put in a vise and rasp the hardening compound off – the ends can be done with a coarse sander . When removed ,soak head in water for an hour , dry off and rasp again .
After this you will not see any spirals of the leather but rather like the inner side of a piece of leather and will be a soft surface. As it is used it can be trimmed up accordingly.
It sounds a little arduous but time taken to do this will give you best results. Remember a Rubber or Poly Mallet cannot be used again one surface damage has occurred unless repaired expertly.
Your rawhide mallet will give you long time of Service and is available with different sizes of head available. Because this is a ‘light’ mallet there are models weighted with metal to allow more impact depending on work demand.
